Tessa Jowell has backed market traders and local residents to try to get Brixton's famous covered markets listed to help prevent their demolition.

Tessa commented: 'Brixton's markets are intrinsic to the historic and architectural bones of the town and they hold the key to its past and its future.

'That's why I support their listing and that is why we cannot afford to let them go.'
