Helpful Information

ACA - 'Additional Costs Allowance'
As an inner London MP the 'Additional Costs Allowance' for a second home does not apply to me.

AOE - 'Administrative and Office Expenditure'
(see IEP below)

IEP - 'Incidental Expenses Provision' - now called AOE - Administrative and Office Expenditure
The IEP is the 'Incidental Expenses Provision' which I use to pay for such costs as: rental of venues where I hold my advice sessions; equipment and stationery supplies for my office; communications (prior to 2007/08); travel and certain staff related costs (including payments to interns, volunteers and work-experience students to cover daily travel and subsistence costs). Funds from the IEP can be transferred to the staffing allowance.

In 2007/08 the maximum permitted IEP expenditure was £21,339. My IEP expenditure was £10,518.

Communications Allowance
This allowance was introduced in 2007 to help MPs to communicate with their constituents. Any material produced using this allowance must not be party political in nature. Its introduction was accompanied by a cap on the amount that MPs can spend on House of Commons postage-paid stationery. I use the allowance to produce cards with details of my advice service sessions and contact details; parliamentary reports and for advertising my contact details in local newspapers. I have not used the allowance for leaflet distribution which is carried out by volunteers.

In 2007/08 the maximum permitted Communications Allowance expenditure was £10,000. My Communications Allowance expenditure was £5,405.

Staffing Allowance
The staffing allowance is used to pay salaries to permanent staff members, for employers' National Insurance contributions (12%) and to some people who assist at my advice services. I employ 3.4 full time equivalent members of staff. (My staff are very experienced and, as of May 2009, have worked for me for a combined period of 35 years and 6 months).

My staffing allowance of £90,505 was supplemented from the IEP allowance, making a total of £102, 028.
