Tessa Jowell has welcomed news that the East London Line Phase 2b extension will now go ahead.
This will allow passengers to travel more easily from local stations at Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye to Clapham Junction in the west and to east London when the extended and refurbished East London Line is back in operation.
Tessa Jowell is pictured at a meeting late last year with the Secretary of State for Transport, Geoff Hoon, when she pushed the case for go-ahead of the East London Line extension along with fellow south London MPs, Harriet Harman, Joan Ruddock and Martin Linton (pictured). Tessa has also worked hard on this issue with GLA Member for Lambeth and Southwark, Val Shawcross.
Tessa Jowell commented: 'I am delighted that the go-ahead has finally been given for the Phase 2b East London Line Extension.
'The Government stepped in while the Mayor dithered and, by covering 80% of the costs, made sure that this hugely important project for south Londoners will now go ahead.
'The Mayor has already cancelled lots of projects that would have benefitted my constituents. I am delighted that the government was able to force him into a position which meant that even he couldn't scrap this one.'
