Tessa Backs Brixton Markets
 Tessa Jowell has backed market traders and local residents to try to get Brixton's famous covered markets listed to help prevent their demolition. Tessa commented: 'Brixton's markets are intrinsic to the historic and architectural bones of the town and they hold the key to its past and its future.  Tessa Jowell has welcomed news that the East London Line Phase 2b extension will now go ahead. This will allow passengers to travel more easily from local stations at Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye to Clapham Junction in the west and to east London when the extended and refurbished East London Line is back in operation.  Tessa Jowell is concerned that a new rail timetable commencing on 14 December will remove two trains per hour from the off-peak timetable on the service running to London Bridge through Gipsy Hill, West Norwood, Tulse Hill, North Dulwich and East Dulwich. She opposed these changes with Southern Rail and the Department for Transport. Surprisingly, a passenger representative group supported the changes and they will now go ahead. The new timetable means that that there will be four off-peak trains to and from London Bridge every hour instead of the six at present. The trains that are being removed are...  Tessa Jowell was at Elmwood School on Friday where she visited the brand new IT suite that has recently been completed. She also opened the schools new, lottery funded, garden and was delighted to help some of the pupils as they planted some elephant garlic. Tessa Jowell commented: 'The beautiful new garden at Elmwood School will bring lasting pleasure to children, parents and staff. Everyone involved should be congratulated.  Tessa Jowell was delighted that Ebony Horse Club received the recognition they deserve with a visit by the Duchess of Cornwall in September.  Tessa Jowell helped to launch the first School Swimming Gala in forty years at the Brockwell Park Lido in July.
Organised by Whippersnappers - over 100 primary and secondary school pupils from Lambeth and Southwark took part in the Swimming Gala in the newly refurbished lido on Thursday July 3rd 2008.
The races were both competitive and fun, with serious ‘Olympic style’ races as well as opportunities to cross the water in pyjamas or inflatables. Whippersnapper entertainers were stilt walking, drumming, dancing and delivering workshops in martial arts, fitness, acrobatics and street dance. Local elders were also invited to join... Tessa Jowell Welcomes Decision on New East Dulwich School
 Tessa Jowell has welcomed the grant of planning permission for a new seconday school for boys in East Dulwich. She said: "I welcome the granting of planning permission for the new East Dulwich boys' school on Wednesday. "Over many years of campaigning for this school, parents have told me how they desperately need a good local secondary school which their children can attend. "I do hope that, after all this time, for the sake of children who will attend the new school and the parents who have supported it over many years, there will be no more delays...  Tessa Jowell has welcomed the granting of permission for works to improve the junction of Dulwich Road and Norwood Road in Herne Hill.
Her views (in full here) were available to members of the Planning Applications Committee together with her earlier observations, submitted as part of the consultation process - report here (Tessa's views are reproduced on page 17).
Summer 2007: Tessa Jowell has reaffirmed her support for plans to improve the busy road junction close to Herne Hill Railway Station.

 LOCAL MP SUPPORTS 'FINANCIALLY VIABLE' POST OFFICE
Tessa Jowell is backing Mr Francis, the Sub Postmaster at the Gipsy Road Post Office in her constituency.
Tessa (pictured left with Mr Francis) supports the retention of the Post Office in Gipsy Road having discussed the matter in detail with the sub-postmaster as well as other local traders and residents. She comments:
"I feel that there is a strong case to keep this particular office open. This is based on the fact that it has a growing income through Post Office related trade which makes it, in my opinion, financially viable.... Tessa Working With Dulwich Going Greener
 Tessa Jowell recently hosted a meeting at Dulwich Library with Dulwich Going Greener to encourage local schools to incorporate sustainability into their teaching and into everyday decisions about their schools. This was a follow-up to a workshop she hosted with Dulwich Going Greener last autumn. Geoff Shearcroft from AOC Architects shared his experiences on how to make school buildings and grounds more sustainable. Ben Seymour and Kevin Williams from the new Sustainable Services Team in Southwark spoke about the services they offer to schools including support and information. TESSA JOWELL SECURES REASSURANCES ON PLANS FOR BROCKWELL PARK AND HERNE HILL JUNCTION
Tessa Jowell has secured a reassurance through the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) that plans to improve the junction at Herne Hill will not have an impact on HLF funding for the restoration of Brockwell Park.
Tessa Jowell, the local Labour MP for Dulwich & West Norwood, said:

 Update 23 October 2007 After last week's update from Tessa Jowell (see below) the Dulwich Medical Centre has now agreed to withdraw their application for a Pharmacy. A statement issued by Southwark Primary Care Trust reads: Mediquick have now withdrawn their application to open a 100-hours pharmacy on the Dulwich Medical Centre site in Crystal Palace Road, East Dulwich. This decision has been taken in conjunction with Dulwich Medical Centre in response to feedback from the local community. Tessa Jowell attended the official opening of the Dulwich Wood Nursery and Children's Centre on Wednesday.
The Centre has received funding through the government's SureStart programme which Tessa Jowell initiated in her first Ministerial position at the Department of Health
Tessa Jowell said: "The new facilities are absolutely superb and will allow every child at the nursery to thrive. I want to congratulate the Headteacher, Elizabeth Fleetwood and the Governing body, ably led by Katy Jaffe, for having the vision to take this project through.
